Mumbai felicitates Prof. T. N. Krishnan

On Saturday, December 20th, 2008, Prof. T. N. Krishnan was felicitated by all the major music organizations of Mumbai in a function organized under the auspices of the venerable Shanmukhananda Sangeetha Sabha. Priests and Vedic scholars presented the maestro with pooja offerings from all the major temples in the Mumbai metropolitan area.

Speaking on the occasion, Sri V. Shankar, President of Shanmukhananda offered a concise yet thorough retrospective of Prof. T. N. Krishnan's illustrious 73-year career in classical music. Sri. Amarnath Sury, Sri. Jayaram Mani, and Sri. V. Rangaraj also added their memories of association with Sri T.N. Krishnan over the many decades.

The executive members of the Shanmukananda Sabha presented Prof. T. N. Krishnan and his children, Viji Krishnan Natarajan, and Sriram Krishnan with three beautiful brushed gold Violins as mementos.

The evening concluded with a violin trio concert of Prof. T. N. Krishnan, Viji Krishnan Natarajan, and Sriram Krishnan. They were joined by Tiruvarur Sri. Bhaktavatsalam on Mridangam, and Vaikom Sri. Gopalakrishnan on Ghatam.

Star of India Award

Prof. T. N. Krishnan will be the honoured recipient of the "Star of India" Award and the title "Sangeetha Samraat" from Wisdom International at the 36th Annual Wisdom International Awards Festival.

The award and title will be presented to Prof. Krishnan on Saturday, December 13th, 2008 at 5:30PM at the Narada Gana Sabha Hall, TTK Road Chennai.

Documentary on Vidwan A. Narayana Iyer

We are delighted to present "Portrait of a Guru", a short documentary on Vidwan A. Narayana Iyer, father and guru of Prof. T. N. Krishnan. This film was originally aired at the Parampara function which was held in Chennai in December 2007.

The background music in the very beginning of the video is a rare recording of Vidwan A. Narayana Iyer playing raaga khamas.

T. N. KRISHNAN FOUNDATION FOR PERFORMING ARTS is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and propagation of the rich traditions of Indian Classical Music and Performing Arts by providing institutional support to performing artists, educators, and researchers under the guidance and leadership of the preeminent Violin maestro T. N. Krishnan.

T. N. Krishnan's art represents the purest expression of the Carnatic tradition. His emphasis on melodic clarity, spectral fidelity, and emotive finesse are unparalleled in his field. He is a living legend who has witnessed and assimilated the essence of the musical giants of the golden age of Carnatic Music. His music reflects the vigour, poignance and depth of the tradition as it should be practiced. Over the course of nearly seventy years, he has become synonymous with uncompromising classicism and continues to relentlessly pursue this passion. It is this singular passion that the Foundation intends to preserve and bequeath.

Broadly, the objectives of the Foundation include:

organizing and hosting concerts of Indian Classical Music and related performing arts
organizing and hosting educational workshops featuring prominent artists and educators for advancing the understanding and appreciation of Indian Classical Music and related performing arts
funding and guiding research projects in the areas of archival, preservation and documentation of music performances, music instruction, and rarer aspects of the anecdotal history of Indian Classical Music
